Nolan Claims New Forest Club Championship

2012 Club Champion Kevin Nolan.

Members turned out to compete in the seasons big day at the New Forest Golf Club, the 36 hole Club Championship.

Entrants were not only competing for the prestigious Club Championship Trophy which is awarded to the Best Gross over 36 holes, but for the Martin Tadgell Trophy for Best Nett 36 holes, the Trigger Newman Trophy for Best Gross 18 holes and the Dougie Briggs Trophy for Best Nett 18 holes. A tense day where it was key for each player to take to the course with the right positive mindset.  The morning round was a dismal affair weatherwise with persistent heavy drizzle.

Kevin Nolan was leader in the clubhouse after the first round with a superb score of gross 67, two under par for the course and three shots better than his nearest rival Steve Holland, with Josh Young one shot further back.

A snack lunch was provided in the Clubhouse to revitalise the competitors after their first 18 holes and the scoreboard was available to indicated how they stood on the leader board.

The weather improved during the afternoon's second round which saw Josh Young, the 16 year old NFGC Juniors Captain, give an outstanding performance to card 68 to add to his 71 from the first round. Kevin Nolan used his experience to overcome the pressure of Josh during the afternoon by producing a second round score of 68 giving him a 36 hole total of 135, which was enough to take the Club Championship title by a margin of four strokes. Josh Young's two fine rounds totalled 139 off a handicap of 4 which enabled him to take the Nett Championship title with a total of 131 having had a better final round than O'Donnell and Palmer who also totalled nett 131 for their two rounds. A buffet dinner was served followed by the presentation of prizes by Club Captain Liam Finnegan.
